Enhancing visibility at new Switch Island Junction

Recent

VolkerSmart Technologies recently completed a series of rotating mast arm installations, for Balfour Beatty, at Highways England’s new Switch Island Junction in Liverpool.

The team has provided and installed nine mast arms, ranging from five to ten metres in outreach, at various strategic locations across the junction. The first seven were completed in August, with a further two added in September.

Each mast arm displays a set of traffic signals, allowing for greater visibility for the vehicles below, when using the new road layout. The team has also fitted additional brackets to the arms, so that further traffic signals can be added, as required.

Cliff Stonestreet, project manager for VolkerSmart Technologies, said: “I am delighted that we were able to help increase visibility for road users at Switch Island Junction. We have experienced an increased demand for this product, as clients realise the benefits, both in terms of road safety and cost reduction.”

Francis McClave, construction lead for Balfour Beatty, said: “VolkerSmart Technologies provided a professional design and installation service. The new mast arms are now integrated with additional technology, using road studs that illuminate when the green phase of the traffic signals operate.”

Philip Tyrrell, project manager for Highways England, said: “We’re always looking for new ways to further improve journeys and safety for drivers, and we are confident that the newly installed mast arms will achieve just that.”

VolkerSmart Technologies is the new ‘Smart Cities’ initiative from VolkerHighways, who have been installing rotating mast arms for eight years to date.

The mast arms used by VolkerSmart Technologies are a Highways England specified product.
