GULCS: Electric vehicle charging

VolkerSmart Technologies is installing electric vehicle charge points (EVCP) in London, on behalf of Siemens for the Go Ultra Low City Scheme (GULCS), a programme by the Office for Low Emission Vehicles within the Department for Transport.

The scheme aims to encourage more people to consider switching to an electric car, to help improve air quality in urban hotspots, and assist the government in meeting its emission-cutting targets.

This project demonstrates VolkerSmart Technologies’ extensive experience in installing a range of charging points, safely and efficiently, in busy, public environments, whilst working alongside the Boroughs and Siemens to recommend the latest technology available and best value for money.

  • Installation of circa 550 EVCPs across several London Boroughs, including Chelsea and Westminster, Islington, Sutton, Brent and Wandsworth
  • Installation of a further 700 EVCPs planned in the near future
  • Site surveys to find suitable lamp columns and bollards to install or mount EVCPs to
  • Outlining civils works required and provided advice to ensure the site was appropriate for EVCP installation
  • Installation of earth electrodes for excavation and reinstatement
  • Electrical testing and commissioning
  • In-house ICP connections made directly to the local DNO
  • Using Siemens app to register charge point locations and functionality
  • 24/7 planned and reactive maintenance service on approx. 1,300 charge points, including six-monthly routine electrical inspection testing
  • Using real time information through the Siemens field app
  • Working with the wider business, VolkerHighways, for traffic management set-up
